Let's Play is an initiative by the George Herald and SuperSport to give recognition to George school learners who excel in sport. All primary and secondary schools, private schools and even sports clubs may play.
SuperSport will sponsor the monthly prizes. while the George Herald will give coverage to each winner.
The project kicked off in February and will run for 10 months until the end of November, after which an overall winner will be selected and announced at a formal function in December. The awards function will be broadcast on the Let's Play programme on SuperSport.
It's easy to play. All schools need to do is to nominate a budding sport star(s) at their respective schools on a monthly basis and forward the name(s) to the George Herald sports editor, Hugo Redelinghuys.
An independent panel will pick the monthly winner. Each monthly winner will receive a gift package to the value of R500.
Nominations can be sent to sport@groupeditors.co.za at the end of each month - even earlier. Simply send your nomination(s) on a short e-mail explaining what the learner(s) has/have achieved.
Please include a head-and-shoulder-photo of the nominee(s).
The criteria, which the panel will take into consideration, includes the level of participation (regional, provincial, national or international), sportsmanship, continuous improvement throughout the season, regular attendance of practises and the enjoyment thereof, a high level of participation at sports meeting, assisting others - especially younger ones - and a happy attitude.
Learners who excel in any sport may be nominated, whether it's surfing, karate, paragliding, sailing, horseriding, biathlon, squash, rugby, tug-of-war, paintball of tennis - to name a few. Sports organisers and the principal must decide in the end who to nominate.
Sports clubs, like karate, judo and swimming, may also nominate their rising sport stars, but they have to send the nominations via the learner's school.
