SAILING NEWS - Sailors from George, Knysna and Mossel Bay competed at the annual George Lakes Yacht Club Interclub Regatta at Island Lake on 3 and 4 October.
The regatta attracted 44 boats - 32 competing in the fast fleet and 12 in the slow fleet.
Saturday’s cool, rainy weather and light winds allowed only one race to be completed. The conditions changed dramatically on Sunday when a brisk southeasterly provided good but challenging sailing conditions.
Three more fast fleet races and two slow fleet races were completed before the racing ended around lunchtime.
Knysna Yacht Club won the fast fleet interclub competition, while Mossel Bay Sailing Club took the honours in the slow fleet.
In the fast fleet, current Finn class national champion Georgou Divaris of George Lakes Yacht Club dominated, winning all four races. Knysna Yacht Club’s Jacques Louw, also sailing a Finn, finished second.
Mossel Bay Sailing Club sailors Lulonke Lenks and Christiaan Cilliers battled for third place in their ILCA 6s. Lenks secured the position by four points.
George Lakes Yacht Club’s Owen Conradie won all three slow fleet races in his first regatta in the ILCA 4 class after moving up from the Optimist class.
Mossel Bay Sailing Club’s Ekow Bali finished second in a Topper, followed by clubmate Wandile Nkomo in third.
George Lakes Yacht Club thanked the visiting sailors, families, volunteers and supporters, as well as its sponsors.
