GEORGE NEWS - Holy Cross Primary School in George marked a major milestone last weekend, celebrating 130 years of faith and education with a series of festive events that brought together past and present learners, staff, alumni and friends of the school.
The celebrations opened on Friday with a thanksgiving Mass led by Bp Noel Rucastle. Principal Jane Askew paid tribute to the school's founders and the legacy of the Holy Cross Sisters.
"The heart, spirit and values of the Holy Cross Sisters remain at the centre of our work," she said, noting that although there have been no resident sisters since 1996, their spirit continues to guide the school's mission.
From there, the weekend unfolded with a wide variety of activities. The learners enjoyed their traditional ice cream on the field while the guests gathered for tea.
The annual Holy Cross Golf Day took place at the George Golf Club, generously supported by sponsors. That evening, the stage came alive with the Timeless Talent concert, which featured singers, dancers, choirs and even surprise performances from both staff and support staff.
On Saturday, invited guests enjoyed a celebratory breakfast in the gym hall, followed by a tour of the school. A historical art exhibition by the learners allowed alumni, former teachers and board members to reminisce about the past.
At the same time, an internal Rapid Chess Competition - the school's first - showcased the spirit and talent of its current learners.
The weekend concluded with a lively steak night fundraiser, hosted by the school's fundraising committee. Guests enjoyed steak braaied by Van Rensburg's and entertainment by Jovan and Thelma, rounding off a truly memorable celebration.
