WESTERN CAPE NEWS - Anton Bredell was reappointed in his capacity as Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning yesterday 13 June, when Premier Allan Winde announced his new cabinet for the 7th administration of the Western Cape Government.
“I appreciate the trust and responsibility Premier Winde has entrusted me with in this portfolio which I have had the privilege to serve in since 2009,” Minister Bredell said.
Minister Bredell said he is looking forward to dealing with the challenges and opportunities of both departments for the next 5 years: “In local governments we will have to work hard to create stability and maintain financial and managerial discipline, especially in the context of coalition councils. I anticipate that water security in our towns and cities will become a serious challenge as we grapple with fast growing populations, erratic weather patterns, and a constrained fiscal environment within which we must maintain existing water infrastructure whilst also developing new capacity.”
Minister Bredell said environmental challenges are being flagged globally, and the Western Cape is no exception.
“The Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning is playing a crucial role in creating the strategic and legislative framework for the province to balance economic growth and development on the one hand, with environmental protection on the other hand. Climate change will challenge us across all government departments, and the coordination role of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning will be of critical importance.”
Minister Bredell thanked his wife, Michelle, and his family for their support, the Head of the Department of Local Government, Mr Graham Paulse, the Head of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Mr Gerhard Gerber, and their personnel as well as his ministerial personnel, which remain unchanged for the new term.
