NATIONAL NEWS - With the local government elections set to take place on 4 November, residents are urged to act now and make sure they are registered and ready to vote.
The call is simple: don’t leave it to the last minute. Online voter registration is open, and the process is quick, safe and easy.
Even if you are still undecided about who to vote for, being registered ensures that you have the power to make that choice when the time comes.
First-time voters aged 16 and older are especially encouraged to register now. While you can only vote from the age of 18, early registration means you’ll be ready to take part the moment you are eligible.
Those who are already registered are reminded to check that their details are up to date, especially their residential address. If you have moved, updating your address online only takes a few minutes, but is crucial for election day.
Update your address
Unlike national and provincial elections, local government elections come with a key rule: voters may only cast their ballot at the voting station where they are registered.
This means that if you are away from your registered area on election day, you will not be able to vote. Failing to update your address could therefore result in missing out entirely.
Residents are encouraged to take a few minutes today to register or verify their details online at the Electoral Commission of South Africa website, registertovote.elections.org.za.
