NATIONAL NEWS - The rising death toll in the Eastern Cape, now up to 78, is a devastating tragedy unfolding.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) extends our deepest condolences to the families and friends who have lost loved ones in the catastrophic flooding. This loss of life is heartbreaking, and tragically, the number of fatalities continues to rise.
We stand in solidarity with the people of the Eastern Cape and all South Africans affected by this disaster. Those who have lost family members, their homes, possessions, and a sense of stability.
Our thoughts are with the displaced communities now facing the immense challenge of rebuilding their lives.
We commend the hands-on leadership and compassionate response of Minister Siviwe Gwarube, who hails from the Eastern Cape and has been on the ground offering support and comfort to grieving families and communities.
We also welcome the announcement by Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa that a classification of a national disaster had been made - an important step toward mobilising coordinated relief and recovery efforts.
We further acknowledge and commend the tireless work of emergency services, volunteers, and local authorities who continue to respond with urgency and care under incredibly difficult circumstances.
Now, more than ever, we must come together as a nation, united in compassion and resolve, to support the people of the Eastern Cape on the long and difficult road to recovery.
