According to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA), total new car sales jumped by 4.6% from last year's 48 782 units to 51 037, while exports reversed the gains of September by dropping 8.3% from 30 773 to 28 229.
NAAMSA has in part attributed the decline to the recent heavy storms that halted production at Toyota's Prospecton Plant in Durban, as well as disruptions at the Port of Durban itself.
Individual segment were however mixed with new passenger vehicle sales rising by 7.9% from 32 722 to 35 316, while light commercial vehicles registered a small 1.7% decline from 13 603 to 13 376. Medium and heavy duty commercial vehicles were worst affected with respective drops of 3.2% and 5.1%.
