GEORGE NEWS - Every book a child finishes at Pacaltsdorp Library earns a place on its Reading Tree, with the reader’s name and the title added to the display.
The initiative, started in 2025 by library staff member, author and poet Mandy Rose Naidoo, was a highlight of the library’s Literacy Month celebrations in September.
What began as a tree on a wall has grown into a colourful willow filled with the reading achievements of local children.
Among them is Pacaltsdorp Primary School learner Genova Geduld, who read 116 books in 2025, when she was 12. Fellow learner Joshley-Ann Arendse had reached 62 books in 2026 by the time the municipality recorded her tally.
“Every book read, every page turned, adds a new leaf to our growing Reading Tree,” Naidoo said.
The library’s celebration drew 85 people, including 60 children.
The programme featured storytelling, singing, dancing and two short dramas. Young readers were recognised with certificates and medals, while Pacaltsdorp resident Shaun Esterhuizen joined the festivities as Peter Pan.
Young people taking part in the YeBoneers work experience programme also helped celebrate. The event ended with cake and refreshments, but the Reading Tree will keep growing as children finish their next books.
