GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality is calling on all residents, visitors, and businesses to intensify their water-saving efforts as the city enters the festive season under increasing pressure on its water resources.
The Garden Route Dam, George’s primary water source, is currently at 50.98% storage capacity, measured at the new raised dam wall height.
Although 12mm of rainfall was recorded between 18 and 24 November 2025, this has not been sufficient to stabilise dam levels or offset the city’s rising water demand.
Mayor Browen Johnson has appealed to the community to work together in safeguarding the city’s water supply during this peak tourism period.
“This is a critical time for George. Our dam levels are dropping, and demand is increasing as visitors arrive for the festive season. I urge everyone, from households to businesses and guests, to use water responsibly. Saving water now is not just necessary - it is our shared responsibility to secure George’s future,” he said.
The municipality reminds the public that Level 2B Water Restrictions remain in effect and must be strictly adhered to throughout the summer season:
- No mechanical or automatic irrigation systems are allowed.
- Garden watering with buckets is permitted, but handheld hoses may only be used during allocated times and days.
- No washing of vehicles with hosepipes is permitted, except at registered commercial car washes.
- No filling of swimming pools using municipal drinking water.
Residents and businesses are required to check for leaks, reduce indoor consumption, and report any suspected water wastage.

With the combination of reduced rainfall, high evaporation rates, and increasing population activity during December and January, the Municipality emphasises the importance of consistent water-saving behaviour.
“Every drop we save today helps to delay stricter restrictions tomorrow. Let us protect this beautiful city together by using water sparingly throughout the festive season,” Mayor Johnson added.
