Breaking News Video
GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - A massive cypress tree narrowly missed a Blanco homeowner on Monday, 11 May as strong winds started battering George early this morning, uprooting trees and causing electricity outages in several neighbourhoods.
Local ballet teacher Abbi Geldenhuys is still shaken after escaping what could have been a fatal incident at her home in Werda Street.
“I was standing on the deck when everything suddenly went dead silent,” she recalled. “I was watching the tree and saw it slowly starting to tilt. I stepped aside, and down it came - straight to the ground.”
The enormous tree crashed down just moments after Geldenhuys moved out of its path.
She is now anxiously waiting for the George Fire Brigade to remove another large tree on her property fearing it could also come crashing down if the strong winds continue.
The storm winds uprooted several other trees in Montagu Street and near the foot of the Outeniqua Pass. Power outages were also reported in various parts of town as municipal teams responded to weather-related incidents.
