GEORGE NEWS - Local schools are being encouraged in an amazing way to become active in environmental education thanks to the various education programmes developed by the Landmark Foundation.
One of these is the Landmark Foundation Green Award that was created with the idea of recognising and thanking schools for their commitment and dedication to the community, the environment and animal welfare in George.
Monica Vaccaro manages the environmental programme for the foundation and drives schools to become more conscious of the world around them and become active and participate in recycling projects. "We have a responsibility as educational institutes and educators to make learners aware of the crisis that faces our planet.
"Our programmes mitigate climate change, biodiversity loss and all the factors that influence these issues, such as waste.
"I hope that the Green Award initiative will encourage and inspire other schools to join our programmes and take action," says Vaccaro.
These projects are supported by Geroge Municipality, Garden Route District Municipality and various waste recycling agents in George, such as LGE Waste and Henque Waste.
The schools or clubs that received Green Awards are:
• York High Animal Club - received the award for the third consecutive year for the work they do in the community for animal welfare. These young boys and girls work relentlessly to ensure that no dog or cat is left behind.
They assist the community in sterilisation, deworming, feeding, and providing kennels, fences and everything that will improve dogs' lives.
• Glenwood Pre-primary was awarded for another year of excellence in running the Creches Project, an environmental education programme for early childhood development centres. This project was developed by the Landmark Foundation and is supported by George Municipality, Garden Route District Municipality and LGE waste.
• Glenwood House Pre-primary's Green Club received the award for a year of incredible environmental work and dedication and for their contribution to the welfare of animals, the community and the environment. These girls are the environmental leaders of the future.
• Glenwood Environment Society was awarded for their green efforts.
• Glenwood Green Club Bottle Top Project collection towards the donation of a wheelchair was also awarded.
• Four Grade 7 learners of Glenwood House, Hannah McComb, Chloe Bennett, Grace Vonk and Karissa Steenberg, each received the Green Award for three years of leading environmental projects. They are awarded for their dedication and commitment to the environment.
Hannah McComb, Chloe Bennett, Grace Vonk and Karissa Steenberg from Glenwood House each received their own Green Award.
• George Prepratory was awarded for their participation in the Landmark Foundation's Creches Project for which they registered during February 2023. The champion teacher who coordinates the project is Diane Venter.
The first project on the programme is to initiate and implement a recycling system through waste separation.
Well, this school has taken recycling to the next level. Learners are now collecting from community shops and other places and bringing to school.
The school is currently operating as a mini collection point for recyclables such at bottle tops, bread tags, plastic bottles (all types), and even tins. They obtain monetary reward for the bottles and tins.
