GEORGE NEWS - Public transport in Thembalethu is set to receive another boost with the rollout of a third Go George bus route, linking the area directly to the Garden Route Mall.
The new Route 11: Thembalethu – Garden Route Mall will officially come into operation on Sunday 17 May.
It will become the third route serving the community, following the introduction of the R18A route to Blanco in November 2023 and Route 10 to George Industria in October 2024.
The announcement was made jointly by Western Cape MEC for Mobility Isaac Sileku and George Mayor Browen Johnson, who both welcomed the continued expansion of the transport network.
Sileku said the Go George system demonstrates what can be achieved when different partners work together to improve public transport. “I am looking forward to experiencing the new route and meeting commuters who will benefit from the additional transport option, especially the direct link to the mall,” he said.
Johnson described the new route as another important step in extending reliable public transport to Thembalethu residents. He acknowledged that progress had initially been delayed due to congestion linked to the N2 bridge construction, but said the municipality’s ongoing commitment to the project.
“The full implementation of Go George services in Thembalethu remains a priority. We are committed to ensuring the system becomes fully operational and accessible to all residents who intend to use it,” said Johnson.
To support the rollout, the Go George communication team will engage directly with commuters travelling between Thembalethu and the mall. Officials will provide information on how the new route works and assist both current and potential passengers. Businesses and institutions can also request visits from the team to inform staff about the service.
