GEORGE NEWS - A George resident, Lorenda Mudge, was impressed by the efficiency and professionalism of local police after her Honda Jazz was stolen from Doneraile Square in the early hours of Sunday 5 April.
The theft, which reportedly occurred at about 01:33, was unusual in that the vehicle was not physically broken into, suggesting it may have been opened remotely.
The suspect, however, hot-wired the car to make a quick getaway.
Mudge only discovered the theft at 09:00 on Sunday morning. She immediately contacted the police, who responded quickly with two officers and three detectives. After requesting permission to post about the theft on social media, which the police approved as it often aids in tracking stolen vehicles, the search was under way.
Shortly thereafter, a neighbourhood watch patroller reportedly spotted the vehicle and alerted authorities. The car was located in a Merriman Street parking area at around 13:00.
Mudge expressed her gratitude publicly on the local social media page “Georgiete Staan Saam”, sharing a heartfelt video thanking George Police for their professionalism.

Southern Cape police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Chris Spies, confirmed the arrest of a 25-year-old suspect on a charge of possession of stolen property at around 13:00 on Sunday 5 April. Investigations also led officers to a property where a car battery and spare wheel were recovered. The suspect was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday 7 April.
While Doneraile Square remains a safe environment and this incident was isolated, the owners and management have been commended for ongoing efforts to maintain and improve security.
