GEORGE NEWS - The George Fire Services are currently monitoring a fire at the George landfil site out on the Old Airport Road. The cause of the fire is as yet unknown.
George Municipality’s spokesperson, Debra Sauer, says the fire is deeply seated and the personnel are working tirelessly to suppress the smoke using water and soil coverage.
The residents of Delville Park and Groeneweide Park have had a rough weekend battling smoke inhalation since the start of the fire on Saturday afternoon.
“Due to the nature of the fire, it is anticipated that smoke may continue to be emitted for an extended period. At present, the wind is directing the smoke towards Herold’s Bay. However, a change in wind direction is expected later today, which may result in a smell of smoke being experienced in parts of town,” says Sauer.
“The fire services team is doing everything within its means to extinguish the fire and residual smouldering as swiftly as possible. The municipality thanks residents for their understanding and co-operation.”
