GEORGE NEWS – A fire that ripped through Zone 8, Thembalethu this afternoon, Friday 6 June, has razed 39 informal structures to the ground.
George Executive Deputy Mayor Browen Johnson, said the city’s fire department was dispatched just after 16:00.
Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported and local churches stepped in to provide temporary shelter to the men, women, and children who have lost their homes and all their belongings.
The cause of the fire remains subject to investigation.
With a cold front fast moving in, expected to bring icy weather and rain to the area from Sunday to Tuesday, community organisations George Alert Team and Love George have jumped in to coordinate a collection drive for food, blankets, and toiletries that will be distributed by the George municipality’s social development arm.
Donations can be made at various local churches, from where items will be channelled to the city’s social development team. More detailed information about sizes for warm clothes needed should be available on Saturday.

The George municipality also issued a notice that, for safety reasons, power has been switched off in the informal settlement to isolate Zones 8 and 9.
