LOCAL NEWS - Messages of condolence have been pouring in following the tragic death of Lauren Fredericks (37), a social worker from Knysna, who was killed when a large tree fell onto her car yesterday, Wednesday 6 May.
The incident occurred shortly before 08:00 on the corner of Main Road (N2) and Queen Street, near the Knysna Police Station.
According to the Southern Cape Police’s spokesperson, Warrant Officer Chris Spies, an inquest docket has since been opened.
Fredericks, who was employed by the Department of Social Development (DSD) in Knysna, had been on her way to conduct some assessments of residents evacuated due to the adverse weather conditions affecting the area.
She had reportedly stopped in a parking bay when the tree collapsed onto her vehicle.
The Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Jaco Londt, expressed his deep sorrow at the loss. “Ms Fredericks joined the Knysna office in August 2021 and was part of the disaster management response team. She had a passion for community work and was committed to serving vulnerable residents,” he said.
“I am deeply saddened by this loss. Our thoughts are with her family, especially her young son, as well as her friends and colleagues during this difficult time. I also wish to acknowledge all frontline workers who continue to assist the communities during the current adverse weather conditions.”
Tributes have also come from the Anglican Church of the George Diocese.
Bishop Edwin Desmond Pockpass conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Fredericks’ husband, young son and family, describing her life as a gift and assuring them of the church’s prayers and support.
“It is with heavy hearts that we received the news of Lauren’s tragic passing in Knysna. At such a time of sudden and devastating loss, words feel inadequate, yet we wish to surround you with love, prayer, and the assurance that you are not alone in your grief.
"Lauren’s life was a gift, and her memory will remain a blessing to all who knew her. In moments such as these, we turn to the promises of God, who is near to the brokenhearted and who binds up their wounds.
"May His presence bring you comfort in the silence, His peace steady you in the storm, and His love enfolds you when the weight of grief feels unbearable,” his statement read.
