GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Living Cornerstone (TLC) Alzheimer’s care home in Sedgefield has really been struggling since the start of lockdown, as it cannot do any fundraising in the circumstances. Gilda Scammell of the facility says the disease is like death without dying and loss without end.
“It’s a sad reality many find very difficult to face, a reality compounded by the pandemic we are in the midst of,” says Scammell.
Their residents are stuck in their own little world, oblivious to the virus. But it's the family of those affected, the caregivers and staff who are taking the brunt of it.
TLC is a non-profit organisation that, like many others who care for the disadvantaged, are hit the hardest. “There is great truth in the saying that a society's well-being is determined by how it treats its elderly and children,” Scammel said.
TLC is running out of vital items such as surgical gloves, sanitisers, disinfectants and toiletries. “In addition we try our best to help our caregivers by providing food parcels, and we appreciate any help given.”
In addition to the lack of these vital items, family members are also deeply affected. ”The travel restriction prevents them from visiting their loved ones. With Alzheimer's, each moment is precious as it is a degenerative neurological disease.”
If you would like to assist TLC in any way, be it financial or with any goods, please contact Gilda Scammell on 084 544 1203.
