GEORGE NEWS - The man who drove over the cliff on the Voëlklip road yesterday, Thursday 1 September, has been identified as Bertus van Niekerk (50) from George.
“He was a loved man. Everyone loved him and we are going to miss him dearly. His loss leaves an emptiness that nothing will ever fill,” said his broken mother, Kobie Theron, earlier today.
George police opened in inquest docket after the incident. No foul play is suspected at this stage.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies, emergency services were dispatched to the scene at about 15:30 after a member of the public, who was fishing on the rocks nearby, alerted authorities about the vehicle that had gone down the cliff.
Van Niekerk’s body was recovered from the wreck later in the afternoon.
He leaves behind his two daughters, his son, mother, his sister and his wife. The family has requested that their privacy be respected.
