GEORGE NEWS - In a daring morning escape, two awaiting trial prisoners managed to break free from the George Prison on Wednesday 23 August.
The escapees were identified as Calisto Chaderek (32) and Trevor Moliwa (37).
Chaderek is a Zimbabwean citizen who was in custody on charges of housebreaking and theft, while Moliwa, a South African, was in custody on charges of possession of a firearm and possession of stolen items.
Information received by George Herald indicates that the two trial awaiting prisoners cut their way through the bars in one of the bathrooms in the holding cells and escaped. The escape allegedly remained undiscovered until officials reported for duty that morning.
Candice van Reenen, spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), confirmed the incident and said that at approximately 04:00 on Wednesday, two awaiting trial inmates escaped.
"The department is working closely with the police and has launched a 72-hour joint activation order within the cluster to ensure that the escapees are apprehended," she said.
The DCS is investigating the circumstances surrounding the escape.
Sergeant Chris Spies, Southern Cape police spokesperson, said the George detective branch is investigating the circumstances under which the prisoners escaped. "Preliminary investigation indicates that authorities were alerted this morning (Wednesday 23 August) about the disappearance of the two men," he said.
Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects can contact the George detectives on 044 803 4732.
