GEORGE NEWS - The George Council will only decide next week whether Municipal Manager Trevor Botha should be suspended as a precautionary measure while he is being investigated.
According to media liaison officer, Debra Sauer, Council will consider the representations of the municipal manager following the current recess period. Councillors are awaiting a special council meeting believed to be scheduled for next week, where Botha's possible suspension is expected to serve as a confidential item.
Various allegations including financial misconduct led to an urgent motion by the DA on Friday 13 September, demanding Botha's "precautionary suspension".
Botha was given seven calendar days to submit a written representation as to why he should not be suspended, as provided for in the disciplinary regulations for senior managers.
In the run-up to this development, Local Government MEC Anton Bredell ordered an investigation into the municipality's affairs which led to an acrimonious exchange of media statements between Botha and Bredell.
