GEORGE NEWS - The two accused who were arrested earlier this month in connection with the murder of taxi boss Welele Mbudede (60) briefly appeared in the George Magistrate's Court earlier today, Thursday 30 March.
Sinenjongo Mgqibandaba (23) and Simthendile Qwaka (39), are accused of gunning down Mbudede outside of his home in Thembalethu on Wednesday 1 March.
Initially the accused opted for legal aid, but they have since decided to appoint their own legal representative.
The case was therefore postponed until 20 April for their attorney to consult with them before their formal bail application.
They were arrested on Thursday 9 March and appeared in the Thembalethu Magistrate's Court the following day on charges of murder and attempted murder after Mbudede was killed and a family member, who was outside with him, injured.
Mbudede was killed when two men opened fire on him and a young family member outside their house. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died on the scene. The suspects fled after the shooting.
Mbudede was the chairperson of the George branch of Uncedo, and a stakeholder in the George Integrated Public Transport Network, that manages the Go George bus service.
His murder took place on the same day that two petrol bombs were thrown at a Go George bus in New Dawn Park, Pacaltsdorp.
