GEORGE NEWS - The George Herald Sandwich Jam, a 67 minutes for Mandela Day initiative. initiative, saw a whopping 3 500 sandwiches made in less than 30min.
The Sandwich Jam was started in 2012, when 3 000 sandwiches were made. Group Editors Operations Director Nicole Rimbault said the aim is to make 10 000 sandwiches next year.
Several businesses joined in the sandwich making, which took place at the George Herald's York Street offices on Friday 17 July.
The George Herald wishes to thank the following businesses for contributing towards the success of the Sandwich Jam: Pick n Pay donated 150 loaves of bread; Outeniqua Bakery donated 200 loaves of bread; Pernod Ricard donated R2 000 for peanut butter and jam; Margot Swiss donated hair nets, gloves, aprons, sandwich packets and knives; ISP sponsored the tables and the sound system; Lancewood donated the cheese and butter.
The following businesses joined the George Herald staff in making sandwiches: Sotheby's, Garden Route Mall, Property Professionals, Seeff, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), Tavcor, Rundle College, Avis, Protea Hotel, ISP, Pernod Ricard, Rawson Properties, CrossFit, Thembalethu Square, Aurecon, Coetzer de Beer Attorneys, Old Mutual, The Views Boutique Hotel, Lancewood, Mutual Sales, Danica Barnard and Creative Pax.
George Mayor Charles Standers, Eden Municipal Manager Godfrey Louw and Life Comunity Services' youth also rolled up their sleeves to make sandwiches for this worthy cause.
The sandwiches and oranges were donated to Life Community Services, a non-profit organisation, that distributed the food among the needy. Sally Versveld, of Life Community Services, touched on the sad reality that for some people these sandwiches would be the only meal of the day. The sandwiches were handed out at Thembalethu Clinic, Lawaaikamp Clinic, Conville Clinic, Conville Police Station, Phambili, George Night Shelter, Blanco Clinic, Monica's Informal Creche and Rosemoor Clinic.
As Mandela Day is all about stealing the hearts of others with kind gestures, the George Herald had another 67 minutes for Mandela initiative, Christmas in July, where presents were handed out to the little ones at Happy Feet Creche in Parkdene.
"It was such a special occasion to have you visit Happy Feet, and the kids were overwhelmed to receive an unexpected gift. Thank you," said Sally.
