GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Dis-Chem Foundation has for four consecutive years been donating 5 000 blankets to various charities and non-profit organisations across the country.
"This year we asked our Facebook followers and staff to nominate registered charities and we are thrilled that we were able to provide 36 organisations with blankets," says Sherry Saltzman, one of the heads of the foundation.
"This is just one of the initiatives that the foundation runs to provide care and support to burdened communities." Saltzman says the charities include children's homes, old age homes and animal shelters.
Generally the blankets are handed to the organisations but this year, as a result of the Covid-19 lockdown, Dis-Chem notified the chosen organisations to collect the blanket of blankets from a Dis-Chem store closest to them.
"We've seen before what a difference this donation makes to the recipients, and this year we believe it is even more meaningful due to the sudden increase in poverty, unemployment and general uncertainty faced by millions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Consumers are facing a very difficult time and with winter upon us every bit helps," Saltzman says.
The Dis-Chem Foundation was established in 2006 by Ivan and Lynette Saltzman, based on their concern for the growing level of poverty in South Africa.
The foundation is a beneficiary of Dis-Chem Pharmacies' benefits programme, whereby members earn points on what they spend at Dis-Chem pharmacies and a percentage of the purchase value is donated to the Dis-Chem Foundation.
