GEORGE NEWS - George residents and other stakeholders are invited to attend a public participation workshop on the draft 4th Generation Western Cape Integrated Waste Management Plan for 2027 to 2032 which also pertains to George's Gwaiing landfill site.
The workshop will take place on Tuesday 6 October from 09:00 to 12:00 at Blanco Community Hall, 3 George Street, Blanco.
George Herald has previously reported on public concerns over the proximity of the landfill to the Gwaiing river and the leaching of heavy metals into the water.
In 2025, the George Municipality's response to these concerns was that metals such as aluminium, copper, iron and lead are mostly retained in the clay soils and do not reach the river in "significant concentrations". However, the opinion of a group of concerned citizens who have been monitoring the situation, is that leachate dams must be established.
The workshop on Tuesday morningforms part of the development of the provincial waste management plan and will give stakeholders an opportunity to discuss the draft plan and submit their input, comments and recommendations.
The draft plan is available for public comment for 30 days from 16 September.
Residents can view the draft plan here.
