GEORGE NEWS - A 72-year-old man from Kleinkrantz was robbed and severely assaulted by two suspects at his home on Monday 18 November at about 07:00.
Jacques Muskat, who lives on Paradise 4x4 and Paragliding Farm near the Kleinkrantz water treatment works, on the furthest western point of Paradise Ridge, was on his way to pick up staff when he was attacked at his gate.
"I was opening the gate at the bottom when he came from behind and hit me over the head with a pick handle. Luckily I got up and managed to get the handle off and hit him a few times," Muskat said.
A second suspect, allegedly a woman dressed in a black hoody top, then appeared and threw a piece of concrete at Muskat, which he managed to evade, pushing it away with his hand. "I chased after her, but the guy grabbed me in a chokehold from behind and I couldn't get his arms off my neck.
He was very strong - I think they were both on tik or something. The woman then ran to my bakkie and took my bag with my wallet, money and a firearm," he said.
Muskat says he is sore but will be all right. "I'm okay. Just cuts and bruises and a big knop on my head," he said.
Wilderness Defence Force (WDF) quickly arrived on the scene to offer assistance. According to WDF manager Anwill Januarie, they apprehended a female suspect and handed her to the police.
She was however released from police custody later that same day. The male suspect is still at large and the firearm has not been found.
"We are proud of the quick and decisive actions of our team in ensuring justice was served in this alarming case," Januarie said.
"The professionalism, dedication and persistence demonstrated by the WDF, in collaboration with local authorities, reflect our commitment to the safety and security of the Wilderness community. No matter how remote the location, our team remains alert and prepared to act swiftly."
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies said detectives from George are investigating a case of robbery.
"It is alleged that two people accosted the victim and took a moon bag with a firearm from his vehicle. They fled the scene on foot thereafter. The suspects are still at large," said Spies.
