ENTERTAINMENT NEWS - A gathering of a large number of bonsai enthusiasts is expected in George for the Kat Rivier Kai Bonsai Club Autumn Bonsai Festival on Saturday and Sunday, 25 and 26 April. It will be held at the George Garden Centre on Airport Road.
"The benefits of incorporating rocks and stones into a bonsai design to replicate specific natural environments and ecosystems will be explored," says André Swart, the club’s vice chairperson.
"The possibilities are endless, allowing bonsai enthusiasts to express their favourite natural settings within a bonsai display. The purpose of the festival is to share and celebrate ideas, and we have an exciting line-up of demonstrators.”
Bonsai enthusiasts and members of the public are welcome to attend.
The programme highlights are as follows:
Saturday 25 April
A full day of demonstrations exploring rock-based bonsai design techniques:
• Dawn Collier - Japanese black pine “on the rocks”
• Robbie Leggat - Outcrop plantings: texture, scale, perspective
• Clifton Marais, Sally Sanders and Marlene Smith - Rocking ficus collaborative session
• Ray Kingma - Mystical rock landscapes
• Willem Pretorius - Bonseki: A slippery slope
• William Pringle - Root-over-rock my way
• Liam O’Flaherty - Between a rock and a pretty place.
Sunday 26 April
Advanced techniques and refinement of rock-based bonsai compositions:
• Earl Jeffereys - Correcting root-over-rock plantings using rocks as camouflage
• Neville Wilkens - Planting in artificial rock and cleaning newly collected suiseki.
