This launch coincides with the International Literacy Day, which is held annually on 8 September. This day seeks to help communities around the globe to act as a united voice in raising awareness for those who cannot read or write.
The event was attended by Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Anroux Marias, George Mayor Charles Standers, National Book Week Ambassador Lupi Gcayisa and other dignitaries.
“The campaign has been running for six years and has been recognised as one of the successful long-running campaigns. Its main objectives are to celebrate books and promote the culture and love of reading. It also promotes reading as a critical part of South Africa’s development,” said Marias.
The National Book Week programme will run until Thursday 10 September at Thembalethu Mall, Thembalethu Library, Conville Library, Conville Community Hall, Pacaltsdorp Library and George Civic Centre. The programme promises exciting activities such as chess and book competitions, storytelling and more.
