Alfred Maseti, Western Cape public relations officer of the SA National Taxi Council (Santaco), gave the George Herald the deceased’s name, confirming that he was a Uncedo member. Uncedo is the local taxi association in George.
An off-duty policeman from Port Elizabeth has been arrested.
According to a very upset Maseti, the accused is employed in George and was known to the deceased. He said the shooting took place when Ntsi and another man approached the policeman, who was hitchhiking on the N2 hoping for a lift to PE.
“Nzoxolo just wanted to know why he was hitchhiking when he (the policeman) knew he had to make use of the formal transport (the taxis) in place. It is very dangerous to hitchhike on the N2 and it is illegal. People give lifts to hitchhikers for money, but they have no papers and are not registered to transport people. The government must do something to stop this illegal practice. An innocent man has died.”
