GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - Opposition parties of the George Council call upon the minister of local government, Anton Bredell, to suspend the mayor, Melvin Naik.
PBI Councillor Virgill Gericke also called for the suspension of the Municipal Manager, Trevor Botha, saying that as soon as an acting mayor is appointed by Council, then Council should suspend Botha. This came to light during a press conference this afternoon at the George Municipality.
The PBI, FF Plus, ANC, ACDP and AIC were present during the conference. They claim that mounting pressure from their courts resulted in the Hawks' raid this morning.
In a message to Naik, Gericke said, "We've been watching you for quite some time. You even tried to divide the opposition for you to get a complete grip on the affairs of the city so that this corruption should be covered up.
"It did not work. We as the opposition - all of us - are elated. We are very glad about what is happening here today. We expect arrests as soon as possible."
Naik couldn't be reached for comment.
