According to reports, the protesters have been burning tyres and rubble since early this morning.
Police, traffic officials and law enforcement are on the scene monitoring the situation.
The entry to Thembalethu has not been closed off, and motorists are still able to move in and out of the area.
The reason for the protest action is not known.
