RUGBY NEWS - South Africa's Sevens side extended their lead at the top of the HSBC World Series standings, despite being beaten for the second week in a row after going down to Fiji 24-17 in a thrilling Hamilton7s final in New Zealand Sunday.
After their loss to Australia in the Sydney7s a week earlier, the Blitzboks opened up a big lead but fell apart later in the game as a yellow card hit them hard and then the brilliance of a Fijian side in full flight turned the tide against them.
The Blitzboks extended their lead to eight points over second placed New Zealand, who ended fourth for the tournament, while Fiji moved into third place on the standings with their victory.
Fiji celebrated their victory with a come-from-behind win that made their coach Gareth Baber extremely proud.
"All of our games over the last two days have been like that. We were down at half-time but with these Fijian boys, you are always close to getting a score somewhere as long as we can make some of those passes stick. I was proud of the way we defended and went about our business and we deserved that at the end," he said.
