BOXING NEWS - In what must possibly be the shortest world title fight in history Zolani Tete stopped fellow South African Siboniso Gonya in eleven seconds of the first round to retain his WBO bantamweight belt at the SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Saturday night.
At the bell for the opening round the southpaw Tete (53.29 kg) calmly walked into the centre of the ring and landed a right hook to the jaw that sent Siboniso (52.61 kg) down and out flat on his back in the centre of the ring.
Referee Phil Edwards realising that Gonya was possibly in serious trouble waved the fight off at 11 seconds into the round.
Tete improved his record to 27-3; 22 and the overmatched Gonya’s record dropped to 11-2; 5.
Gonya was rated at a very questionable No 3 by the WBO.
The 29-year-old Tete is head and shoulders above any other fighter in South Africa at present and must be the SuperSport Fighter of the Year.
