GEORGE NEWS - Things are looking up for George Mayor Charles Standers, since there is more than a fair chance that his suspension from the DA will be revoked.
This new development follows after his wife, Estie Standers, withdrew her statement to the police in which she accused her husband of assault. Estie Standers could not be reached for comment before going to press.
Following the charges of assault against Standers, he was suspended from all DA party activities three weeks ago. But with his wife's withdrawal of the charges, he may be back in DA business soon.
"Estie Standers has withdrawn her complaint with the SAPS, she is not prepared to give the DA a statement or an affidavit despite us making several attempts to obtain one," said James Selfe, chairman of the DA Federal Executive Committee (Fedex).
"Under the circumstances, I have been advised by the head of the Federal Legal Commission that there is no prospect of a successful disciplinary action against Standers, and accordingly I have recommended to the Federal Executive Committee that his suspension be lifted.
"The Fedex might or might not agree with me. It is still pending their decision."
According to Captain Malcolm Pojie, Southern Cape Police spokesperson, the police are awaiting the decision of the director of public prosecution who will determine whether the case is strong enough to prosecute, reports George Herald journalist Lizette da Silva.
Mayor Standers could not immediately be reached for comment.
