GEORGE NEWS - Within a few months after it has been formed, the new neighbourhood watch in Borcherds has confiscated an impressive array of dangerous weapons from people on the streets.
The Palana Neighbourhood Watch serves the vast area of this community and surroundings.
Its main mission is to root out criminal activities and assist the police in the fight against crime by patrolling the streets on weekends, stopping and searching suspicious-looking people and searching houses where criminal activities are believed to take place.
Neighbourhood watches are an important voluntary component of the South African Police Services (Saps).
The watches are made up of men and women who reside in a particular community who volunteer their free services to fight crime.
Chairperson of the Palana Neighbourhood Watch Lorenzo Seconds said his team go through difficult challenges to make sure their community is safe.
He is very proud of their work.
The police appreciate the assistance.
"You must understand, we have limited resources and we don't have police equipment.
"I therefore would like to thank all our members who continue to make us proud by serving our community voluntarily. We also thank our local businesses who support us with equipment that helps us to fight crime," said Seconds.
He appealed to more community members to join them in the fight against crime.
"If more people can join us and support us in any way, I am sure we will be able to make our communities a lot safer."
The neighbourhood watch also helps to make residents aware of criminal activity and what to be on the lookout for, as well as who to report issues to.
