Caleb's big test: Attitude is everything

GEORGE NEWS - The past three months of Caleb Swanepoel’s life have been a definite challenge. "I am thankful that I persevered with my studies, as now I am able to apply my mind and make sound decisions for my future.

The uncompromising support of my family, friends and the medical fraternity has carried me through to a point where I am preparing to write my final first year exams next month."

Swanepoel, the 20-year-old UCT drama student from Prince Albert who survived a shark attack at Buffalo Bay in June this year, told the George Herald in an exclusive interview at the University of Cape Town’s Hiddingh Campus in the City Centre, "One thing I have learnt on this journey is that your attitude dictates the response that you will receive.

"Everyone has gone out of their way to help me. The university staff and my fellow students are carrying me through my rehabilitation. I am on a fact-finding journey as I come to terms with my new life. I have always stayed positive, after all, I am a drama student."

Emma Maeyer, a school friend from Prince Albert who is studying fine art at the same campus, says Caleb is an inspiration for all. "He is a popular figure on campus and everyone asks about his progress and, more important, he is still Caleb. If you are feeling down, go and talk to him, he is the right medicine to cheer you up again. He will know what to say."

Caleb said to be dependent on others for mobility and time management has been the most difficult adjustment.

"My family and friends have been fantastic and always available if I need to go somewhere, but the time it takes me to get ready, I feel, is problematic. I need more time when attaching the prosthesis, if it is not 100% properly attached to my stump, it is uncomfortable and can become very painful."

The doctors have told Caleb that for the soft tissue to heal properly can take between six and 12 months. "I must be careful not to push myself too much and be patient and have patience."

His biokineticist, physiotherapist and therapist are all more than satisfied with his progress.
