Both the defence and the prosecutor presented their closing statements at the George Magistrate Court on Friday 11 September as to why the suspects must be released on bail or kept in custody.
The defence attorney, Oliff d'Oliveira told the court that his clients are not a flight risk neither will they interfere with the investigation of the case. "My clients' identification and their addresses are verified, I therefore see no reason for them to run away as all they want now is to go back to their families and be providers," said d'Oliveira.
The state prosecutor, Herman Steyn gave a long presentation in court as to why the suspects must be kept in custody, he said the failure of the suspects to respond to evidence that incriminate them proves that they are a danger to the community.
"If the court releases the suspects, this may cause fear in the community when the Go George buses are introduced in Thembalethu on 16 October as this might also lead to what we have witnessed on 19 August," said Steyn.
