Heinrich Ollie Terblanche (24), who played for the SWD Eagles invitational team, fractured his neck at C6/C7 when the scrum collapsed in the 55th minute of the match between the Eagles XV and Evergreens RFC. The match took place before the main game between the Stormers and the SWD Eagles.
Terblanche, who played prop, is paralysed from the waist down and has since undergone two neck surgeries. He is recuperating in the Vincent Palotti Hospital in Cape Town.
A medical team immediately stabilised him on the field and ER24 rushed him to Mediclinic George. He underwent surgery shortly after his arrival and was transferred to the Vincent Palotti Hospital where he underwent a second operation on Tuesday. Terblanche's mother and Supra are at his side.
Supra says the accident is a great shock, but "we believe and trust that God will heal him and that he will walk again, even though the doctors are not optimistic". She said Terblanche, who cannot move his legs, is in pain and that he will have to stay in Cape Town for a long time for treatment and rehabilitation.
The deeply religious young man has only just moved to George to be nearer his fiancée, who is a newly appointed teacher at George South Primary School. The couple got engaged last month.
Innis Erasmus, Eagles medical manager and physiotherapist, told the George Herald that Terblanche's injury is the worst he has seen in his 14-year career. "He will never play rugby again, but we trust that he will walk again."
Meanwhile, Terblanche has been registered with the Chris Burger Fund that lends financial support to an injured rugby player's family. SWD CEO Johann Prinsloo, the management, staff and players wished Terblanche a speedy and complete recovery and encouraged the public to lend the family support.
