This is the time of year when pelargoniums are to be seen flowering in profusion. Generically known as geraniums they belong to the family geraniaceae. Belonging to the genus pelargonium, they are recognised by having bilaterally symmetrical (zygomorphic - can be divided into two mirror images) flowers (mostly) and have scented leaves (aromatic and contain aromatic chemical compounds). They make rewarding garden plants as they are floriferous and can be trimmed back when they become older and sprawl.
