NATIONAL NEWS - Thandi, the Kariega Game Reserve rhino who survived a poaching attack on March 2, was recovering well, according to a report on Thursday.
Assistant reserve manager Jason Loest is watching over her as she fights for recovery, and veterinarian Dr William Fowlds has been treating the wound where the poachers hacked her horns off her face.
Dead tissue had been removed as well as broken bone fragments, maggots, mud and bacteria, reported the Herald Online.
Another rhino, Themba, initially survived the attack at the Eastern Cape reserve, but later died.
Loest said he found it inspiring to watch Thandi improve.
"Tissue is regenerating. She just keeps fighting,” he said.
Loest monitors Thandi and the other rhinos in Kariega every day and tracks her through the ankle bracelet and transponder she wears.
"It helps a great deal, but it still takes long to find her because she is mostly hiding in bushes,” he said.
