GEORGE NEWS - A woman, reportedly from Knysna, who gave birth earlier in the day, jumped to her death after smashing a window on the third floor of George Hospital on Monday 12 June.
Bianca Carls, spokesperson for the Western Cape Health Department, confirmed that the 36-year-old woman took her own life by jumping from the window. The woman was a patient at the hospital.
The police and the George Hospital are investigating the tragedy and only limited information can be released pending the outcome of the investigations.
"The family of the deceased have not given approval for personal information relating to the deceased, to be shared with the media. In light of this, I repeat, we are not at liberty to provide personal details relating to the deceased and her family.
We are however able to confirm that consolation and counselling have been offered to both the family of the deceased and the staff members. Safety and security of patients and staff is a key concern for the Western Cape Government Health. In the light of this tragic incident, George Hospital is currently evaluating its current security infrastructure and systems," said Carls.
