GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - Standing under a South African flag, with the national anthem playing, George resident Minke Janse van Rensburg (18) received a gold medal at the European Down Syndrome Championships yesterday afternoon, 5 September, for 100m Freestyle.
Since it is the European Championships, Minke shared the first place with a European who came second.
“This is part of the competition's rules. Non-Europeans get recognition, but do not take recognition away from Europeans,” said her proud dad, Hennie Janse van Rensburg.
Minke took the fourth place in the 50m back stroke. Today, 6 September, she is participating in the 200m freestyle (10:15) and 50m butterfly (10:55).
Back in South Africa, Minke’s performance is celebrated by her coach, Franna Vorster, and the rest of the swimming community. “Go Minke, go!”
