SPORT NEWS - Bridgton Rugby Football Club (RFC), Heidelberg RFC, and Crusaders RFC will once again represent the South Western Districts (SWD) at the 2026 Ebrahim Patel Community Cup, marking the club’s second consecutive appearance at the prestigious national community rugby tournament.
The competition is set to take place over the Easter weekend in George.
The official launch of the tournament will be held on Wednesday, 26 February, at Fancourt Golf Estate. The event will feature a live tournament draw, the unveiling of official team kits, and the announcement of major sponsors, signaling the formal buildup to one of South Africa’s premier community rugby events.
The 2026 tournament line-up includes clubs with strong traditions and community support. These clubs are Kruisfontein United RFC, PE Harlequins RFC, Safcol United RFC, Botrivier RFC, and Robertson Town RFC. They will compete alongside the SWD trio.
According to Bridgton RFC chairperson Leëzl Wilkens, participation in the tournament extends beyond the competitive aspect of rugby.
“This tournament is about exposure, growth and pride. It gives our players the opportunity to test themselves against the best community clubs in the country while showcasing the strength of rugby in the SWD region,” she said.
The Ebrahim Patel Community Cup has become a well-established platform for community rugby, attracting growing commercial and institutional support. Score Energy Drink has been confirmed as a key partner for the 2026 edition, with additional sponsors expected to be announced at the official launch. Expanded broadcast coverage and digital engagement are also anticipated to further raise the tournament’s profile.
In addition to on-field action, the tournament continues to prioritise grassroots development through initiatives such as kit distribution, rugby and netball clinics, and empowerment programmes in partnership with the Deon Davids Foundation and Kabamba Floors.
