GEORGE RUGBY NEWS - Former resident of George and now member of the British and Irish Lions rugby team, Duhan van der Merwe, had a great start in his first game in the red jersey on home soil.
He scored three tries for the touring Lions against the Sharks at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Wednesday night, 7 July.
The Lions won the game 54-7.
Van der Merwe grew up in George and went to Outeniqua High School. He made George proud on Wednesday night. Not only did he score three tries, he was also named Man of the Match.
It was not Van der Merwe’s first appearance in the red jersey. He played his first game for the Lions against Japan on 26 June. In that game at Murrayfield in Edinburgh, that the Lions won by 28-10, he also scored a try.
His parents, Alhan and Dulene and his twin sister, Simone, still live in George. Van der Merwe’s older brother, Armand (Akker), has played for the Springboks.
