Strauss became the 57th Bok captain and the first of Allister Coetzee’s era as the national team coach in June, when South Africa took on Ireland in the home test series, which they won 2-1.
The former Cheetahs and current Bulls skipper took over the captaincy from Fourie du Preez, who lead the country towards the end of last year, and is now ready to pass on the torch.
Strauss made his Bok debut in 2008 against Australia and has earned 58 more caps since then, scoring 30 points in that time.
“When Coach Allister approached me to lead the team, I was both humbled and honoured,” Strauss said.
“The plan was for me to serve and lead a team in transition as well as I can and take things week by week, but back then I already told him that I was thinking of retiring at the end of the season”
