SAILING NEWS - The final activities for the George Lakes Yacht Club (GLYC) sailing season 2023/2024 took place at the club on Sunday 20 June.
Firstly, the annual prize-giving was held where the trophies won during the season were awarded. In the senior fleet, it was Martin Rostek who was the most successful.
He was awarded no less than 10 trophies, including the sought-after Angus Hay Award, presented by the commodore to the member who has made the greatest contribution to the club, or sailing in general, throughout the year.
Other trophy winners were JP Buys, Georgou Divaris and Malcolm Osborne, who won the Millenium Trophy and was awarded the Peter Grant Trophy for Member of the Year.
The junior fleet comprised mainly the Optimists of Owen Conradie, Cameron Simpson and Milan Nel, now dubbed the Three Musketeers, who enabled GLYC to win both the Knysna and George Lakes inter-club regattas and were also prominent in the New Year and Inter-schools regattas.
On a points system that ranks their performances, all three tied, so it was decided to award the Toppies Trophy (best Optimist), Paul Trevelyan Cup (best progress) and the JJ trophy (best beginner) to all three.
At the AGM, Commodore Dr David Laing reported on the past season. He said that club sailing continued to have low attendance and that there should be an endeavour to improve in this next season. The club had however hosted three successful regattas throughout the year.
A new committee was elected. They are:
President: Brian Musto (re-elected), Commodore: David Laing (re-elected), Vice Commodore Maurits Lammers (re-elected), Rear Commodore Mark Bennetts, treasurer: Marc Conradie (re-elected), secretary: Surisa Nel, development officer: Evelyn Osborne (re-elected), bosun: Malcolm Osborne and additional committee members: Mandy Conradie and Martin Rostek.
