GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The George Squash Club held its first ever Professional Squash Association (PSA) Tour event from 24 to 26 January.
It was also the first ever PSA event held in the Southern Cape.
Another PSA Tour event starts today, Thursday 30 January, in Mossel Bay and it concludes on Sunday. (See the list of players and the match schedule below.)
National and international squash players, as well as Eden players, are competing in this event, taking place at the squash courts at the Mossel Bay Golf Estate in Linkside in town.
The Eden players taking part in this competition are:
Jean-Pierre Brits - Mossel Bay (a former Protea player)
Christian Swanepoel - George
Ross Smorfitt - George
Oz Campbell - Knysna
Ian de Jager - George
Mikhail Schabort - George
Last weekend's event drew entries from all over South Africa, as well as from as far afield as Namibia and Zambia.
With squash making its debut as an Olympic sport at the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles (LA28), much effort is being made worldwide to raise the profile of the sport.
The matches were of a high standard last weekend and the event gave the players the opportunity to gain PSA ranking points.
