KARATE NEWS - In a remarkable journey marked by perseverance and achievement, local karateka Nathan Laas has emerged as a shining star in the karate community.
Hailing from Karate-Zen George, Nathan has recently garnered a string of prestigious accolades that solidifies his reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the sport.
The journey began in February 2023 when Nathan was awarded the coveted Eden colours, swiftly followed by receiving Western Cape colours in March of the same year. His ascent continued unabated as he clinched the prestigious Protea Colours in April this year.
Nathan's prowess was further highlighted during his participation in the Region South competition in Namibia held this past June, where he secured an impressive second place with a score of 4 each. Despite narrowly missing the senshu status, he demonstrated remarkable resilience and clinched the silver medal in kumite - a testament to his tactical acumen and unwavering determination.
Not content with local triumphs alone, Nathan has set his sights on international glory. His stellar performances have earned him a coveted spot to represent South Africa in the 11th Commonwealth Championship to be held in Bangladesh at the end of September.
Nathan has dominated the Karate South Africa (KSA) competitions this year, claiming gold in every event he participated in.
This outstanding feat has secured his position as the number one karateka in South Africa.
In light of his upcoming international endeavour, Nathan and his support team appeal to the local community for assistance. The costs associated with international competitions, including travel, accommodation, and training, are substantial. Therefore, donations and sponsorships from local businesses, organisations and individuals would greatly aid in ensuring that Nathan can compete at his optimal level and represent South Africa with pride.
Nathan's coach, sensei Mareon Ferndale, has utmost confidence in his protégé. He emphasised that Nathan possesses not only exceptional talent but also the discipline and determination necessary to excel at the Commonwealth Championship and beyond.
As Nathan prepares to embark on this next chapter of his journey, the Karate-Zen community stands united in support of their champion. Contributions, whether big or small, will play a pivotal role in helping Nathan realise his dreams and continue to make strides in the world of karate.
