GEORGE NEWS - Outeniqua High School learner Mianette Theron (17) represented South Africa at the UCI Junior Track Cycling Championship in Luoyang City, China from 21 to 25 August.
Mianette qualified for the elimination with a first place and went on to finish 19th in the elimination finals. Additionally, she recorded a personal best in the individual pursuit race.
"She makes Kwaggaland's heart bloom with pride," wrote Outeniqua High School on its Facebook page before she departed. Her sponsor, Warthog Sharpeners, also expressed their pride in her performance.
"I entered my first international competition with the aim of gaining experience while giving my best and keeping RSA's name high," says Theron.
"The level of competition opened my eyes and I now know what I have to work towards. I would like to participate in more international competitions next year with the aim of going further and improving at next year's world [championship]."
Theron won her elimination qualifier, finished 19th in the final eliminating race and recorded a personal best in the individual pursuit race.
