GEORGE NEWS - The Eden Region staged the Youth and Elites Western Cape Boxing Championship last weekend, 27 to 29 May, at the Rosemoor Stadium main hall in George with talented young boxers coming in their numbers to attend.
The championship was scheduled for two days and the finals were held on Sunday in chilly winter temperatures.
The deputy mayor of George, Raybin Figland, officially opened the stage with a powerful message encouraging the youth to take part in sport. Zelda van Staden of the Eden Sport Council also shared some words with the boxers.
The five regions that participated in the championship are Cape Town Metro, Eden Region, West Coast Region, Overberg Region and Cape Winelands. Cape Town Metro did very well, taking home the spoils including 16 gold medals and the championship title.
Hosts Eden Region received three gold medals. West Coast took one medal while Overberg and Cape Winelands received three each.
The best bout of the championship was between Asekho Nocele and Siyakholwa Xhanti, both from Cape Town.
