The 2013 Champions Sundowns faced tournament debutants Galeshewe Ladies FC from Northern Cape in the lop-sided encounter.
Andisiwe Mgcoyi, Banyana Banyana star player, who is the top goalscorer for Sundowns with 10 goals and Diski Queen of the match expressed her excitement about playing on South African soil once again. “We have travelled so often and it nice to be back home and scoring so many goals because it has been a while since I scored as many goals.
“This was definitely a great result for the team and when any team comes to a match unprepared, they need to be punished. But this does not mean that we can relax in the matches coming up. Every opponent is different and we need to adjust as a team.”
The second match between Durban Ladies (KwaZulu-Natal) and Kanatla Ladies FC (Limpopo) played to a stalemate when they drew 0-0 with lots of missed opportunities for both teams.
This draw resulted in both teams securing their spot in the semi-finals of which they topped the log.
The third and final match of the day between Bloemfontein Celtic v Red Roses FC which ended with the Free State hosts going 1-0 into the halftime break.
Red Roses fought back but found themselves giving their opponents a penalty in the final minutes of the game which was converted into Bloemfontein Celtic’s second goal of the match.
“My team played well but this is not the result that I was hoping for. We will concentrate on winning fifth position now,” said Bloemfontein Celtic Head Coach Edwin Lisene.
